The Pan-African Parliament, is the legislative body of the African Union. The Pan African Parliament held its inaugural session on 18 March 2004. At present it exercises oversight, and has advisory and consultative powers, which will last for the first five years of its existence, after that time period it will exercise full legislative powers. Its 235 Parliamentary representatives are elected by the legislatures of 47 of the 54 AU Member States rather than being directly elected in their own capacity. Initially the seat of the Pan African Parliament was in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia but it was later moved to Midrand, South Africa. The first President of the Parliament was Hon. Dr. Amb. Gertrude I. Mongella from Tanzania.
The current President of the Parliament is:
Hon. Dr. Moussa Idriss Ndélé , from Chad, representing the Central African Region.
The First Vice President is:
Hon. Bethel Nnaemeka Amadi, from Nigeria, representing the West African Region.
The Second Vice President is:
Hon. Marie Noëlle Françoise Labelle, from Mauritius, representing the East African Region.
The Third Vice President is:
Hon. Laroussi Hammi, from Algeria, representing the North African Region.
The Fourth Vice President is:
Hon. Joram Macdonald Gumbo, from Zimbabwe, representing the Southern African Region.
These five Officials constitute the Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament.
Ten Permanent Committees were created to deal with different aspects of life in Africa.
The Parliamentarians are assisted by the Secretariat of the Pan-African Parliament.
